I don’t know about you, but I rely on my canvas tote bags year-round. Living in a place that gets its fair share of rain and snow can make carrying your tote a bit tricky. The last thing you want is to ruin your favorite bag! While there are waterproof canvas tote bags available for purchase, you can also easily waterproof your own bag at home. We’re sharing a few popular methods to help protect your tote from the elements.
Waterproofing Spray
Using waterproofing sprays and seam sealers is one of the simplest ways to protect your canvas tote. Not only does it leave the canvas material unchanged, but waterproofing spray is also widely available. To get the best results, make sure you apply two coats to ensure the fabric becomes fully waterproof.
- Prep: Start by removing any lint or dirt from your tote with a lint roller, and ensure the canvas is completely dry.
- Spray: Follow the instructions on your waterproof spray. Apply an even coat over the entire surface, including seams and any zippers. Once it dries, repeat the process.
- Set: Hang the tote bag and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours. Once it’s dry, your tote is good to go!
Wax
Waxing canvas has been a tried-and-true method for centuries, though it may give your tote a more rugged look. Be aware that waxing can slightly alter the color and texture of your bag. Keep in mind, too, that once waxed, your tote shouldn’t be washed often, as the heat from the washer can melt the wax.
When choosing a fabric wax, opt for one made from natural ingredients, free from silicone and petroleum, to keep it eco-friendly.
- Prep: Make sure your tote is clean and dry. Use a lint roller to clear away any dirt or lint. Before applying the wax, test it on a small, hidden area to check for any changes in appearance.
- Spread: Right after prepping, begin spreading the wax evenly across the fabric in broad strokes. As you work, the wax will warm up and spread more easily. You may also need to use your hands to work it into the material.
- Set: Use a hairdryer to heat the wax and help it adhere to the canvas. After waxing the entire bag, hang it in a warm, dry place for a day or two to fully set.
Note: No matter which method you choose, always follow the specific instructions on your chosen wax or sealant.
While these are two of the most common methods to waterproof your canvas tote bag, there are many other techniques you can try. We hope this guide helps! If you’ve discovered other tried and tested ways to waterproof your tote, we’d love to hear your tips!
